OVERVIEW

The Ivi o Te Tupuna project reflects Rongorongo's dedication to restoring the sacred connections between the Rapa Nui people and their ancestors by repatriating ancestral remains taken during the colonial era. These remains, held in institutions across Europe and America, were often removed under exploitative conditions. Our work includes forming partnerships with museums and scientific institutions, advocating for the respectful return of these remains, and raising awareness of the histories behind their removal. Through extensive research and bioanthropological inventory, we work to reclassify the 'ivi tupuna as the exclusive heritage of the Rapa Nui people, ensuring they are treated with dignity throughout the repatriation process. This project strengthens the Rapa Nui community's commitment to self-determination, cultural resilience, and the enduring respect for their tupuna.
